"Because of the education, I knew to weigh the risks and benefits and make an informed decision based on my current situation. I knew that epidurals can sometimes slow things down, but in my case my nurse (who I adored) told me it would actually help me speed things up because I had so much tension in my hips and pelvis and it would help relax that so the baby could continue to move down. I had been at the hospital for almost 24 hours at this point, and I needed some relief and wanted things to get moving, so I decided to get the epidural. I was worried that I would feel like a quitter but I really didn’t. I was proud of how much I had handled and was confident in my decision being what was best for myself and my baby. They also gave me a tiny bit of Pitocin to speed up my contractions. I was able to get some rest for a couple hours before I was finally ready to push. I pushed for roughly an hour and a half to two hours, but after how long my labor was it felt like I only pushed for a matter of minutes. My doctor told me to reach down and feel how close she was to coming out, and I felt all that hair! (Which was actually no surprise to me; my husband and I both have thick hair and I had horrible heartburn throughout my pregnancy and even made me throw up during labor.) She came right out and onto my chest, and I cried."
